I'm an anime fan and also female. I have been since I was in the 7th grade and I still am in my second year of college at SEMO. BTW I'm going to be an Otaku teacher... When I go to cons I usually see both males and females, though much more females cosplaying. ddillow - I also live in Cape Girardeau! We do have anime party every week up at SEMO, you should check it out. (Well since campus is closed at the moment it won't start up until school starts again...)

I'm a girl and a huge anime fan. I started when I discovered Fruits Basket, and I was ten at the time. The rest is just history~ xD

I'm a female, but I tend to cosplay as male characters. I am working on TRYING to cosplay more females, but most of my favorite characters are male. As far as fandom goes, though, I don't tend to be limited. I like shows geared towards girls as well as guys (ex: Golden Boy). My love started with manga and later on went into anime. I openly admit that I prefer manga (it tends to have a lot more of the details included) over anime, though, as is obvious because of 2 full bookshelves. I swear, I have real books in there too, but they're geared toward Japanese things, as well. For instance, I have books on the Yakuza and Hikikomori (a mental disorder mainly seen in Japan) that I read just because I'm interested in the topic.

@.@ Die? Well, I would hope the shock of seeing me as a girl wouldn't be that frightening. Especially since I have a few girls in my next cosplay set.

Ok, I wouldn't die because then again you wouldn't let me. I actually forgot about that one. DX

Female here. It seemed like the anime-watching college friends were female, but we had a few guys.
I didn't exactly do a guy/girl headcount at the con, but my impression was of somewhat more female con attendees than male, like maybe 60/40. Then again, there were a lot of events and panels I didn't attend, so maybe I just chose a female-heavy programming track?

Female. And I dunno, I feel like I see as many guys as girls at anime cons. But I never stopped to count.

I think it started out with mainly guys in the 80s and 90s, but then girls kind of took over as cosplay became big. It's starting to even out now.

I have noticed that cosplay seems pretty female-dominated. Maybe I just look at more female than male profiles on cosplaylab and cosplay.com, but it seems like there's maybe a 70/30 female/male split. Does it seem that way to anyone else?
(And crossplay is something like 95/5. In fact, it seems to me that there are some male characters that I have NEVER seen actually cosplayed by a male cosplayer.)

I as born male. Identify as female. I so wanted to choose both on that pole. coming from California conventions such as Ani-magic I've seen a ton of females attending and the early days of anime-expo 93-95 there were mostly males. I've seen at San Diego Comic Con 2004-2009 more young girls than young boys and seeing all the youngsters makes me feel old.
sincerely, Cait

Sorry to go off-topic, but you moved here from California? Cool! What brought you to this lovely, much colder city?
