We'll continue to use the class system based on experience rather than how good your current costume is. Otherwise, I don't see how you could judge within the classes. It would be something like, "Well, here's the class for unhemmed costumes where the costumer isn't wearing a wig. Which one is the least crappy?" rather than, "Here's a kid who tied some sweatshirts together for his first costume, and here's another who attempted to make her own lace for her first costume. Which one shows the most effort and attention?"
I agree that some of the judging decisions seemed odd. There were judge's awards that confused me because they were worded so similarly. I'm not the masquerade director anymore, so I shouldn't be getting involved, but because the judges were people I trusted to do a good job, I'm surprised at how odd the decisions were.
Still, odd judging decisions don't warrant, to me, an entire tossing out of well-established and as-fair-as-possible classes. We have to go on the honor system here. We can't be too accusatory toward our entrants. If judges spent their entire judging time trying to determine how experienced the costumer is and whether or not he made his costume, they wouldn't be able to look closely at the costumes (which you say they didn't do anyway, and which I will look into for you). Just encourage your friends not to try to pass off stuff they didn't make as stuff they did. It's not worth it to do so because it will eventually come out and make you look like a jerk.

Well said^_^ Great con overall, loved the masquerade atomsphere. The masquerade process was painless and the tech rehearsal was life saver (seeing how the hubby couldn't see anything) lol Thanks a bunch for all your explanations and comments:3 Again, thanks for all the fun, and hope to see everyone soon^_^

Thanks! I'm sorry to worry so much on the masquerade, but costuming is my *thing*, so it's important to me that it's as good as possible for the costumers. That said, I can't always make it perfect for every costumer/cosplayer. We try to make it fair, smooth, and painless, but it doesn't always end up that way.

Ok, first off, I LOVED the majority of the Con, so don't take this as hateful, I just see a lot of problems that can be easily corrected. Crane EventIt was a wonderful idea, and I loved it, but as I'm sure alot of people heard, someone collected half of the winning ones. My suggestion; Do this event again, but don't put out the cranes until after opening ceremonies, and don't tell everyone what color of cranes are winners until closing ceremonies. Kawa Kon SnapI LOVED this event. However, as one of the few entrants, I noticed two problems. Several professional photographers entered, and the results were given during closing ceremonies. Solution; CLASSES. Do Beginner, Intermediate, and Professional. And show the results during closing ceremony. Easy as pie. MasqueradeFirst off, Kelly Farwell did the best she could with what she was given. None of this is directed toward her, she was great. ... Please, please, please, get more judges! Two is no where near enough for the workmanship division, there needs to be more opinions. Also, please coordinate better! I know there was some radio trouble at the beginning of the masquerade, but there's no reason the staff shouldn't have all been briefed before hand. The staff directing entrants onto the stage didn't know that we were suppose to go to the audience, they initially were telling us to go back up to the green room. Music. Please, somehow, coordinate the music better. I was the #5 entrant (Ichigo) that received no music during my walk-on. I think that was highly unfair, and greatly affected my judging. Last, the awards. I understand perfectly awards such as best in show, in all the different levels, but PLEASE don't add crap like "Best Use of Dead Furniture" and "Most Disturbing". IMHO, that was complete BS. Did anyone realize all but 3 contestants won awards!? 19 awards, out of 22 entrants. How is that even remotely fair? Yes, I was one of the 3 and I put A LOT of work in my cosplay, but some guy that bought most of his costume wins "Best Use of Dead Furniture". And YES, his was bought, he lied. He only made the sword, he was bragging about lying in the green room. That leads me to another thing, when they judge the costumes for workmanship, get some judges that will actually LOOK at them! I know, I was judged, they didn't even look at any details. They couldn't have told if had made or bought mine which is ridiculous. I'm sorry if I seem a bit enraged, but I am. Just please, organize better, get some fair judges, and quit making up awards just because. *Nods thoughfully* Thank you very much for the feed back. It is much needed. I plan on fully revamping the whole Masqurede for KK '11 No doubt. I've got a few Ideas up my sleeve that intend to try out. I will also take your ideas and thoughts into consideration for sure. okay? Thanks so much! (P.S. The made up awards are called Judges awards. They were designed to have awards given to people whom, Impressed the judges, but wasnt best in show, or Ect.)

I say for me, the highlight of the con was being interactive with more people than I have ever been before. ^^ I really enjoyed meeting so many new people this year!! : D @isenpai: Yes, a few of the cast members had disappeared for a bit, but we had some stuff staged to allow some of us a break as well, and then some problems not pertaining to the ball had come up that needed my attention. None of us were gone for too long though, and I hoped that it was not a problem for you or anyone else. Some of them didnt even want their break. XD I want to thank you so much for coming! Mysterious Trainer N: This. Made me cry. O.o I am so happy that you enjoyed the ball, and we are all glad that we could make this event even possible. ^^ Thank you so much for being there. Aaand... If Kawa Kon will have us back, SADC is already planning the next one. ^^

I appreciate the compliments for the game room! I thank you for them! It was a lot of hard work putting all of that together in the short notice that I did. I again would like to thank the GEA for coming and helping, and a big thanks to Jon from NakaKon for donating half his systems for the game room. I hope if we do it again next year to have just as nice, if not better game room.

I thought the kon was great!! I thought the hotel was not, which makes me sad. The hotel staff were rude and unhelpful most of the time (excluding some of the Engineering staff). At least the front desk manager was awful. I felt he had a bad attitude towards, and looked down on the kon-goers. Through the way that the staff members acted toward the participants at the kon I was given the impression that they did not want us there. I hope that the kon is moved to another hotel for 2010, because I hated to see a good convention tainted by the poor atmosphere created by the hotel staff.

I judged a cosplay contest two years in a row at an anime convention and that was the main complaint was that I required it to be homemade if they wanted points because out of the 50 points they got, 20 of them was based on the craftsmenship of the costume. The funny part was the Naruto cosplayer with the "homemade costume" with the tag sticking out by the neck, lol. I thought the cosplay ran smoothly compared to others I have seen. I had a lot of fun there. As for the hotel staff, they are always rude to con goers, not sure why. The only thing I would change about the con would be to put mini schedules on the rooms or on a stand in front of the rooms. Wasn't sure when things started with some of the events. Will be back next year though as Tiki I want to chime in on this. Who is the heck buys a costume and enters it in a Masquerade? That is completely idiotic. As I have never made an entire costume I will not enter a Masquerade until I deem it worthy.

We made the signs for the easels and then found out at the last minute that the easels had been sold to SWANK A/V. It pissed us off a little. Anyway, they were already attached to foam core, so we couldn't post them ON the doors. Next year, we'll make doubles so we can post them on the doors.
As for the hotel, it was really like any hotel where you have some rude people and some nice people. The general manager was running around doing all he could to keep the rude staff from being rude because he really wants us back. By midday on Saturday, he'd weeded out the staff who was harassing con-goers. Honestly, I thought their attitude was MUCH better than ANY I've seen at a hotel (besides possibly the Viking). I don't think you'll see many problems at Bishie Con this year now that most of the staff know what to expect, and the GM has vowed to make it a comfortable experience.

Anyone who thinks there were problems with the hotel staff this year obviously wasn't there last year. Like I said, it was a HUGE improvment to being chewed out like we were last year. Last year some of my friends and I had JUST come up from the rave and were sitting in the lobby to get some air, and one of the hotel staff told us to stop loitering when we had only been there for a minute! I had a few of the hotel staff ask me what was going on, but none of them seemed upset or distraught, just curious. I even got some compliments from them~
