I always get specific questions about this, so I'd like to clear it up a bit since we're now just over a month away from the con.
Remember that this is a family-friendly convention. Please wear clothing that you know will cover your illegal bits entirely (including your buttocks). If you are afraid you might fall out of it, please wear something different to save yourself from embarrassment.
Please do not intentionally scare anyone at the convention. Frightening the "norms" may sound like a lot of fun, but when they've got an airsoft gun to the face, they don't think it's much fun. When the police are putting you in handcuffs, you won't think it was much fun either. The same goes for trying to pick a fight with them. There are other people in the hotel who do not understand what the convention is. Kindly answer their questions, but don't start a fight. We have a rule against that. Even if they insulted you first, YOU are bound by con rules. They aren't, sadly.
We are a VERY lenient convention when it comes to weapons, and we'd like to keep it that way.
Our main rules are that you may not have real weapons (real firearms that can shoot bullets, sharp swords) or fire any projectiles. Also, realistic-looking firearms must have brightly-colored tips. Because we believe that our con attendees are mature and capable of understanding the consequences of their actions, we do not want to limit the fake weapons you can carry any further.
However... the hotel, while they have approved these weapon rules, has a few staff members who do not understand them. While our security knows very well what the rules are, and the hotel general manager knows as well, some of the front desk staff has given us problems in the past with realistic-looking weapons. If that sort of situation occurs, please remain calm. Do NOT threaten anyone or raise your voice. This will violate the "no fighting" rule and may result in the hotel calling the police. Instead, either tell them that you understand and tell the nearest con security person (they're wearing bright orange shirts) about the incident, or ask them to call the con security or the hotel general manager. About 90% of the time, you will be allowed to carry the weapon.
If you are worried about getting in trouble, carry the weapon holstered or sheathed or even in a case through the lobby. If you do not draw it or brandish it, you are unlikely to get in any trouble.
Con security will not yell at you for brandishing your weapon at what looks like a willing participant in a photoshoot as long as your weapon follows the con rules.
Our security is from the Zombie Squad. I'm a Metal Gear cosplayer. Believe me, we understand the importance of great weapons on your costume.
Please don't be an idiot when it comes to weapons so that you don't spoil it for anyone in the future.
Thanks, and have a happy and safe con!
