So OK, this is going to sound really bad, but trust me on this one.
Is it OK to bring a deactivated grenade? It is literally hollowed out, and it was made during World War II. It's an antique grenade with absolutely no explosive tendencies. It is completely harmless, and the only difference from this grenade and an exact replica of the same grenade, is that this one was actually made with the intention to explode kill people, but has since lost the ability. The pin IS still in, but the hole drilled in it is large enough to put your finger in, and all the acids and gunpowder have been totally removed by a WWII era artifact collector and dealer.

Unfortunately, no. The reason is that most public places don't allow that sort of thing. I'm sorry, but you'll have to go with something plastic.

Is there, say, nothing to stop me from saying "I made it out of clay and have some cool prop making skills here look see there's a hole it's harmless"?
I mean, people are able to bring in airsoft weapons with orange tips, right?

No. People generally aren't aloud to bring air soft guns because they are a projectile. Its possible to have one, mabey, if its peace bonded....but the final call is katrinas.

"Peace bonded"? Like I'll do whatever it takes to use the thing, if it's possible to bring it.

You can't peace-bond something like that. The issue here is that it was once live and isn't now, but it's like an unloaded gun. You can't bring it because it IS a weapon that just isn't loaded. Just bring something plastic. There have to be limits somewhere, and a real grenade, even without explosive properties, is still a real grenade.
If anyone from the hotel sees you with it, you WILL cause a scene. There are many cases of people bringing non-live grenades into public places and being arrested for it. Just don't do it.
