Just wondering how many people sew or do other costume-y textile crafts (i.e. knitting).
I sew. Learned at about eight but didn't get the hang of it until high school when my grandma had me work with my first pattern.
I don't knit yet though I've been meaning to learn. I do embroider.

You know I sew. I started about the same age, sewing buttons on felt to make little coats for my mini Pound Puppies and Pound Kitties, and mini quilts for my dollhouse. I didn't start actually sewing seriously until I was in SCA, and began to make my own Renaissance costumes. All other crafty-type hobbies are going to have to be learned in the process, making props, masks, etc. I learned some extremely basic crochet from my grandma, but I've forgotten how to do it; I've been thinking about taking SLCC's basic crochet class to refresh, and learn a bit more. Still, crotchet takes so long. It'd take me weeks to make a hat or a scarf that I could make in an hour or two if I just sewed it.

I sew... kind of.
Hand-sewing is all I know how to do right now, and my knowledge is honestly very limited. But there is a lot you can learn from practice and logic, really!
Now if I could just learn how patterns work, and not be so afraid of the sewing machine...

I've been wanting to see someone do a workshop at Kawa on how to use patterns. So few cosplayers in St. Louis know how to cut and sew a costume properly, and I'd like to see more learn. It will have to be next year as this year we only have one panel slot left, and it's not really long enough for a sewing workshop. @guin - the reason I want to learn to knit is so I can make a Tom Baker scarf. We all have to have our reasons.

I know it might be boring... and, well, "elementary" so to say, but I would LOVE a panel on following a pattern... as well as one that will help us get ideas on how to draft our own, which is undoubtedly a useful thing when it comes to cosplay. A shame that there's no room for it this year.

I learned basic sewing on my mom's old Bernina 830. I made some of my costumes in part. My mom helped as well. However I'm now seeking my own machine as money gets better.
I spend 8 hours hand stitching the Jade Falcon logo layer (battleTech) by layer on my wool Green and Black jacket my mom helped me make.
I did make the Kero-chan pajams (card captor sakura) that I wore until they got to worn to wear again.
I want to learn to make faire garb and be able to make corsets.
sincerely, Cait

I was taught how to sew in middle school, but I haven't done much since then. The apron for my Pyramid Head costume last year was the first major thing I worked on in awhile.

I just found out about this con yesterday. I sew, and I make costume sewing patterns. I would love to teach a panel on how to follow a pattern. I could do some basics in an hour if there was still room, but I'd be more than happy to do it in a longer format next year.
I teach sewing at different events all around the nation during the year and find it a lot of fun. It's also so much better to be able to have that skill to make the costumes you want.

Unfortunately, our schedule is now full, but I'll let you know if there is an opening for a panel.

I sew, but I've got a Brother machine, and no serger I'm self taught, and I like to think I've figured stuff out, but I know there's all sorts of secret goodies that would make my experience a lot more fun (read: less stressful, irritating... damn zippers >[ So much trouble). Having a panel on that stuff would be great! Or if everyone agrees to meet up and have an unofficial knowledge swap!

@supergeekgirl: I saw your Doctor scarf on Facebook today. Looks great!
I'd be willing to work on a pattern/sewing panel in the future, even as just a demonstrator or a "go cut this out real quick" gofer. It'd be fun. It'd be a good thing to consider having more than once, since we probably get new cosplayers every year.
I also have a Brother machine, and I don't have a serger either. I learned on my mom's Singer, but it had an internal bobbin-winder, which jammed many times and gave me fits on every single sewing project until I gave up on the stupid thing. My Brother machine winds bobbins externally. Yay for an outside bobbin winder.
